According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as ICT support technicians is expected to continue to grow very strongly over the coming years. This very large occupation is likely to see around 62,000 job openings over the next five years.

Generalist IT Support stream
Choosing the IT Support stream will give you the skills you need to work as an ICT help desk operator. You'll discover how to care for computer hardware, provide ICT advice to clients, and provide basic system administration support.

Foundation stream
Providing a broad focus area, this stream has units from networking, programming, web design, cyber and cloud to give a general idea of IT and can step you into all Diploma areas.

Cyber Security Awareness
By choosing this stream, you will learn how to identify security threats and how to maintain the security of digital devices. You will also learn how to protect and secure information assets and how to administer security of systems.

Networking stream
The Network Administration stream will teach you how to set up computer networks, diagnose and action network problems, and install and manage protocols. 

Web Development stream
The Website Technologies stream will prepare you to work as an ICT technician building and maintaining websites. You'll learn how to use social media tools, produce images for the web, and build, review and maintain simple websites.

Mobile iOS App Development stream
Mobile iOS App Development introduces you to building dynamic apps and user interfaces using Swift - a modern and powerful programming language which powers Apple's app ecosystem. You will use Xcode which is Apple's Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to develop apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac and more. You will also learn about app design and creating technical and user documentation to meet client specifications.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Domestic students
You must have completed year 10 or equivalent.
Enrolment Conditions apply for students under 17 years of age.

International students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other. View a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

TAFE Queensland Online students must have access to a Windows 10 or 11 computer. Some tasks cannot be done on a Mac M1 computer.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs up to the value of $135, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You will also require access to personal stationery and a USB or external hard drive (minimum 1TB). 

Important information

When studying Online self-directed it is strongly recommended students follow the order of study - Basic Cyber Security Awareness followed by order of study - Web Development, as well as not to enrol in more than two units per intake or the units required to complete one cluster/stage, unless otherwise advised.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
