Course overview

Kick start your career in the furnishing industry with this entry-level course. Gain the machining skills needed to specialise in solid timber. 

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, there is stable future growth predicted for wood machinists and other wood trades workers. There are likely to be around 1,000 job openings in this occupational area over the next five years with employers looking for people who are reliable, work well in a team, and have a strong work ethic. 

You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to perform timber and composites machining for the manufacture of furniture, cabinetry, windows, doors and other components. You will also learn to set up, operate and maintain a wide range of wood machines including computer numerically controlled sizing (CNC) and processing centres. Our teachers are qualified tradespeople who have strong industry relationships and are experts at passing their knowledge on to you.

Upon successful completion you will be qualified to work as a solid timber machinist, other woods machinist or machining technician.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • long leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • ear muffs or ear plugs that conform to the Australian Standard AS 1269 or 1270
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

  • Training record book
  • Scale rule - metric 1:1, 1:10, 1:20, 1:50 (model 62 m)
  • Folding rule or tape measure -  1m folding rule or 5m tape measure
  • Set square - 60°, 30°, 45° (size 8 or 10)
  • Compass and divider set
  • Semicircular protractor
  • Calculator (non-scientific is fine)
  • Pen - blue or black
  • Highlighter
  • Pencils -  HB, 2H and 4H
  • Eraser
  • A3 drawing paper (booklet).

Transition statement

Replacement qualification
This qualification has been replaced by MSF30322 - Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology, as of 7 December 2022. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 6 December 2023.
