Course overview

This qualification is essential to become a heavy commercial vehicle technician. Successful completion of this course will allow you to become a qualified tradesperson servicing and repairing trucks, buses, earth-moving equipment, or tractors and other farming machinery.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for qualified mechanics (including diesel mechanics) grew strongly over the past five years with employers finding it hard to fill vacancies. Job openings are expected to remain steady in the near future with around 23,000 job opening expected over the next five years. 

In this course you will apply your practical skills and gain underpinning knowledge of how to diagnose problems, repair and service a range of systems and components of heavy vehicles and equipment. You'll repair and service engines, transmissions, cooling, steering and suspension systems, electrical circuits and systems, hydraulic and air braking systems, and diesel fuel injection systems. You will also apply your skills and knowledge to complete heavy vehicle safety and roadworthy inspections.

Successful completion of this qualification will allow you to apply to become a qualified heavy vehicle tradesperson and continue your career in the industry.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Domestic students
While there are no entry requirements for this course, TAFE Queensland requires you to be indentured as an apprentice with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.


International students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other - For a list of all English Language test accepted by TAFE Queensland International; and
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • clear safety glasses to AS 1336 or 1337
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • mechanic gloves
  • ear plugs or muffs
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard protective clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks after enrolment, during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationary, a USB, and a calculator.

Placement

International Students
If you are not currently employed in industry, during your course you will be required to complete vocational placement so you can start practising your new skills in a real-world environment. To ensure you gain a broad range of practical experience, thus further enhancing your theoretical learning at TAFE, you will be placed in a range of industry relevant settings ranging from automotive dealerships to small, medium and large general automotive repairers.

TAFE Queensland will assist in arranging suitable placements. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider, and these can include early mornings or late nights, any day of the week, including public holidays. 

You’ll be provided with a vocational placement diary which includes workplace forms. Once you’ve achieved competence for each workplace task, a workplace form needs to be completed and signed off by the workplace supervisor and registered training organisation instructor. These workplace tasks have a direct link to your learning outcomes and assessment requirements. Your vocational placement diary is reviewed on a monthly basis by a member of the TAFE Automotive Teaching Team.

Completing placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are required to complete 400 hours of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
